The old adage that says the harder you work, the more you're appreciated does not always apply in todays world. Combine that with an obsession to just make lots of money without regard to happiness and you have a "company fool"

Okay, okay, so I'm just one guy. But in the studio, I'm an entire band. I play electric and 6 & 12 string acoustic guitars, mandolin, bass, keyboards, and drums plus do all the vocals and write all the music. I'm self taught and don't read music except for maybe chord charts. Well maybe not entirely self taught-mom got me started since she was a guitarist/mandolinist herself. But she played by ear too so guess that's where I got it. Not that I didn't do my time in various bands. The last, Legacy, was a full time road band until 1983 when I finally got to a space in my life where I told myself there's got to be a better way than just playing covers for a living. And then I found digital recording. Way cool...........

Story behind the song
I work for a regional operating Bell company in my other life and was caught up in the middle of lay offs. Although I didn't lose my job, many people did. The song is a combination of many different people's experience all rolled into the unlucky character in the song.
Lyrics
He makes a living workin' sixty hours a week Can't even find the time to rock his kids to sleep He doesn't care about the job or the satisfaction More cash for the 401k and that someday soon vacation But when his job gets cut he'll bleed He'll get on his knees and plead But who's gonna give a damn When he goes broke he'll cry He'll look up and wonder why The dream's slippin through his hands His hopes have all gone wrong in believing this is all Caught in a corporate attitude Secure in an empty platitude he's still alone Company Fool He works the thankless days Just hoping for that bonus Selling the only life he has to a company that cares less The dollar is absolute but do they have to be so cruel The budget comes first for better or worse Who the hell made up the rules But when he gets cut he'll bleed He'll get on his kness and plead But who's gonna give a damn When he goes down he'll cry He'll look up and wonder why the dream's slippin' through his hands His hope have gone all wrong in believing this is all Caught in a corporate attitude secure in an empty platitude He's still alone Company fool Company fool all he thinks about is hopin' for the bonus Company fool He works the thankless days Company fool Oh, but they care less Company fool Who the hell made up the rules
