Okay, okay, so I'm just one guy. But in the studio, I'm an entire band. I play electric and 6 & 12 string acoustic guitars, mandolin, bass, keyboards, and drums plus do all the vocals and write all the music. I'm self taught and don't read music except for maybe chord charts. Well maybe not entirely self taught-mom got me started since she was a guitarist/mandolinist herself. But she played by ear too so guess that's where I got it. Not that I didn't do my time in various bands. The last, Legacy, was a full time road band until 1983 when I finally got to a space in my life where I told myself there's got to be a better way than just playing covers for a living. And then I found digital recording. Way cool...........

Story behind the song
The first half of this song was recorded in Nov. 1973 in an audition for Delta Records (who have long since disappeared)-I took the the first half and mated it with a re-recorded and rewritten version of the second half and merged them together. The most challenging song on the album from a technical viewpoint...but a lot of fun!
Lyrics
Friends, relatives, parents and graduating seniors. We welcome you to this years commencement exercises for our graduating seniors of nineteen-seventy ?? We now urge you to join with us in this solemn occasion as we sing the alma mater.... I remember Mary Ann Her freckled face smiling As I dipped her ponytail in the ink High school days, examinations Going steady, spring vacations Memories that bring back a smile And my high school days sometimes make me frown When I think of all the lonely times I couldn't talk it out Because our teacher like a fool was lecturing And no one was listening We had good times my friends and I Causing trouble in the study hall Doing it every chance we got Homecoming dances, party crashing Football players clean cut and dashing I remember it all And my high school days sometimes make me frown When I think of all the lonely times I couldn't talk it out Because our teacher like a fool was lecturing And no one was listening It was the middle of May The time was near And everyone was getting scared but me I was glad to get out The good times I remember well But the bad times I thought were pure hell If I'd only known then what I know now I checked in my cap and gown to get that piece of paper Dad said "son, your education's just begun. You're out, my boy, and on your own For twelve long years this was your home" And when I look back I see that he was right And my high school days sometimes make me frown When I think of all the wasted time I spent fooling around While a teacher Staying cool Was lecturing And I wasn't listening No I wasn't listening We'd like to thank you for attending this years commencement exercises for our, now, graduated seniors of 2003. And we of the faculty and staff would just like to say that we feel extremely proud of the academic accomplishments of this graduating class. Thank you.
