Story behind the song
This song is a tribute to Jamaica-such a small place with so much influence. I will donate the money raised from this song to an organisation called Empress Menen Foundation. They are an organisation started by Sister Yvonne in London who got a vision from His Majesty (Haile Selassie) to look out for the welfare of elderly Rastafarians in Jamaica. These elders bore the brunt of persecution for their faith in His Majesty´s divinity during colonial Jamaica.Rastas were discriminated against a lot more then than now, but we still dont have the respect that I and I deserve as true followers of Christ and custodians of the Revelation. All elderly people must be respected and Rasta elders moreso by the younger generation of Rasta. If the persecution of Rasta was just as hot today as it was in those days, one wonders if those who chant Rasta today would be just as outspoken. Would many still be Rasta if Rasta were still being shot on sight and if the police were ordered to bring all rastas in "dead or alive" as was the orders of Jamaicas Police Commissioner in 1961? Morgan Heritage ask this question very well in a very beautiful song,In any case, the elders kept the faith and it was this faith which inspired the likes of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Burning Spear to bring forth the musical fruits that we enjoy today. Burning Spear especially, has been voicing the importance of Marcus Garvey, who influenced all nationalist leaders in Africa from Nkrumah to Kenyatta. In this manner Africa owes its political independence to Jamaica. The Song "Zimbabwe" by Bob Marley helped the freedom fighters win the war against Ian Smiths Rhodesia. And still today Jamaica is at the forefront of expressing free black thought. So personally, from me Chiozo King Of Africa, I say "Thank you Jamaica" and may the day come soon when the children of slaves will be kings and priests of the Most High in Mount Zion...AFRICA!!!Welcome home. RASTAFARI.
Lyrics
hey jamaica look what you doing
see what you ve done
You got the whole world dancing
The whole world loves this reggae
Thank you Jamaica
Everybody rocking steady
Thank you Jamaica
Jah beat deh pon street
Thank you Jamaica
You got the whole whole world at your feet
Thank you Jamaica
Callin out to the sons and daughters
of the land of wood and water
Do you know how much I long to
see you in the flesh?
You were taken into slavery
but you fought and showed your bravery
and in courage and resistance
you are still coming fresh
And strong you shall remain as you dancing thru the pain
Hey Jamaica look....
Through the drums of Rastafari
Youve taught me how to be I
and the voice of Marcus Garvey
liberate my mind
Im gonna walk on thru your sunshine
and vision in your moonlight
If it wasnt for your prophets I would still be blind
So blind....and I come from Africa y all! Hey!
Hey Jamaica look what you doin, see what you done...
ad lib: oh yeah yeah Jamaica .....
