Polwit Opapant, the composer (in any genre) and the jazz saxophonist.
Polwit Opapant (b. 1971), a native Thai composer, started his first music
lessons at the age of nine by playing French horn with The Prince Royal’s College concert band (Chiang Mai, Thailand) under the baton of Thienchai Namthep. He, later, switched to saxophone and continued the lessons more seriously with Pinai Preechapon at Montfort College when he was fourteen. He has been a professional jazz saxophonist since his sophomore year at Payap University where he studied music theory with Ayu Namthep, Chan Po, Soros Kuptarat and Sompan Wongdee, and received a Bachelor of Arts in Western Music in 1993.
Opapant advanced his studies of music in 1996 at Middlesex University,
UK, from where he received Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Music (Jazz). During the
Middlesex years, he studied music composition with Robin Stephenson and
Edmund Phillip Parker (a famous British composer and a founder member of
Django Bates’s ‘Loose Tube’ jazz group). He also received a Post Graduate
Certificate in Sonic Arts programme at the same university. Opapant has completed his Master of Music in Theory and Composition at the University of Northern Colorado, USA. He studied composition with Evan Copley, Robert Ehle, saxophone with Roger Greenberg, and jazz improvisation
with Kyle Malone. His composition and musicianship as a saxophonist are
recognized by various organizations, among others, International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) and National Association of Schools of Music (NASM)
At the present, Polwit Opapant is an Assistant Dean for Commercial
Music Program and a full time lecturer at Silpakorn University, Bangkok,
Thailand.
